First osteopathy visit consultation

Your first visit

We start with your story.

On your first visit, a detailed case history will be taken of the presenting problem:

  • How the problem first occurred
  • What the pain feels like
  • What aggravates or relieves the symptoms
  • Whether the pain is focused or travels

Details of your past medical history will also be taken — previous treatment, x-rays, and any medication for other conditions — before a physical examination.

Examination

How assessment works

Every patient is treated as an individual. First visits are allocated a minimum of 60 minutes; follow-ups typically last 30–40 minutes.

Active examination

Observing your normal standing posture helps assess symmetry, muscle tightness and compensatory patterns. You’ll be asked to perform movements — flexion, side bending and rotation of the spine (pain permitting) — so mobility and limitations can be understood. Similar movements may be used for shoulder, hip or knee problems.

Orthopaedic testing

Specific orthopaedic and neurological tests may be performed to establish joint function, muscle strength, reflexes and nerve involvement. Blood pressure or other system checks may also form part of the examination. Where symptoms are severe or complex, referral via your GP for x-ray, MRI or blood tests may be recommended.

Passive examination

A hands-on assessment where the osteopath moves your body or joints to evaluate range of motion, detect restriction, and identify tenderness within soft tissues such as muscles and fascia — while you remain relaxed, lying or sitting. This guides the most appropriate treatment.

Musicians

Treatments for musicians

Barbara works with many amateur and professional musicians, addressing the physical challenges of pain, injury and disorders which can affect play. Each instrument has specific demands — seeing an osteopath with that knowledge should give you confidence that your needs will be met.

Barbara is a member of, and performs regularly with, the de Havilland Philharmonic Orchestra, founded in 1969 — a membership of around 90 professional, semi-professional and talented amateur musicians.
